October 1st, 2012 not only marked the new hospice quality measures data capture requirement, but also the compliance to use the new occurrence code 55 to list the date of death.
The National Uniform Billing Committee (NUBC) approved a new occurrence code to report date of death with an effective date of October 1, 2012. Medicare systems shall accept and process new occurrence code 55 used to report date of death.
The date of death which will be present when patient discharge status codes are:
- 20 (expired)
- 40 (expired at home)
- 41 (expired in a medical facility)
- 42 (expired – place unknown)
