CMS Clarifies New Therapy Reassessment Answers

CMS published a revised Questions and Answers that clarifies the latest therapy reassessment changes for home care providers. In the Therapy Reassessment Q & A there was no new information, but further explanations.

CMS confirmed that the January 1, 2013 effective date for the therapy reassessment changes in the CY 2013 HH PPS Final Rule mean that these changes are effective for episodes beginning on or after January 1st. The answers also provide a new scenario which confirms that visits during which a required reassessment was missed will be non-covered.

Other revisions include several existing Q & A to incorporate changes in the Final 2013 PPS Rule. Under those changes, therapists in multi-discipline cases must reassess on visit 11th, 12th or 13th to meet the 13th visit requirement and on visits 17, 18 or 19 to meet the 19th visit requirement (unless the ordered frequency for a discipline doesn’t permit this).
CMS also made a coverage change which will allow other disciplines’ visits to remain covered after one discipline misses a reassessment.
